तर्पण: प्रत्येक पुत्र का परम कत्र्तव्य है कि जीवित अवस्था में अपने माता-पिता का उचित सेवा-भाव का ख्याल रखें और मरणोंपरान्त उनकी आत्मा की शांति के लिए पिण्डदान तर्पणादि कार्य को करें। पितरों के प्रति श्रद्धाभाव रखना उन्नति का कारण बनता है। पौराणिक मान्यता के अनुसार पितृपक्ष के दौरान इतर योनियों में भटकते हुए आत्माओं में अपने परिवार से मिलने एवं उनके पास अप्रत्यक्ष रूप से आते हैं। इस दिन विशेष रूप से उनके नाम पर दिये गये अन्न-फल से उनकों प्रसन्नता होती है और तृप्त होकर आशीर्वाद प्रदान करते हैं। ऐसे दिवंगत आत्मा जो अतृप्त हैं, जिनको मुक्ति नहीं मिल पायी है या फिर पे्रत योनि में जो भटक रहे हैं, उनके लिए तर्पण करने से उनको शान्ति मिलती है।
